Valdivia International Film Festival adds new category to 2024 call for entries and announces Pepe as opening film
- FICValdivia adds the Chilean Audiovisual Students Short Film Competition, as a new competitive category.
- The Dominican feature Pepe, by Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias, recent winner of the Silver Bear for Best Director at Berlinale, will be this year’s Opening Film.
The regulations are now available for the call to the 31st Valdivia International Film Festival, the traditional event known for exhibiting Chilean and international films in five competitive categories: Feature Film, Youth Feature Film, Latin American and Caribbean Short Film, Latin American and Caribbean Children’s Short Film, and the new Chilean Audiovisual Students Short Film Competition.
Organized by Universidad Austral de Chile, produced by the Valdivia Cultural Center for Film Promotion, and convened by the City of Valdivia and the Los Ríos Regional Government, FICValdivia offers filmmakers a space for dissemination and competition, along with promoting national and international audiovisual productions of artistic quality. This year, the festival will take place between October 14 and 20, 2024.
Pepe (Dominican Republic, Namibia, Germany, France. 2024. 122′) by Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias, will be this year’s opening film. Regarding the choice, FICValdivia Director Raúl Camargo points out: “Pepe is one of the most inventive and audacious films in recent times, a playful and complex work that portrays the decolonization and violence in our territories from the imagination, without submitting to a logical format, breaking free from the typical limitations in contemporary cinema, which seek to pigeonhole and format pictures, making them lose their freedom. It is a political work coming from an unusual quarter, in terms of what is expected of Latin American and Caribbean cinema. It is in this outburst that, with savagery and tenderness, with experimentation and comedy, it becomes a fundamental piece.”

Works completed on or after March 1, 2023, are eligible to participate, provided their Chilean premiere takes place at FICValdivia. Works applying to the competition, in the different categories, will be submitted to a selection process carried out by the festival’s programming team. The Official Selection will be announced during the month of September on the festival website www.ficvaldivia.cl.
Registration in the FESTHOME platform will remain open from Monday, March 11 through Friday, April 26, 2024, until 6 pm, Chile Standard Time (UTC-4). The jury will be composed of Chilean and foreign personalities from the audiovisual, arts, and culture sectors.
